Tempe police dog helps arrest suspect

July 15th, 2008, 10:24 pm by Eddi Trevizo

An unusually resilient Tempe man put up a difficult fight with authorities after pepper-spray and a Tazer gun failed to bring him down, police said. The suspect was finally arrested with the help of a K-9 officer.

Benjamin Olanrewaju, 44, had been troubling passersby for several hours at a bus stop near University and Hardy drives, according to authorities.

Tempe police said when officers attempted to detain Olanrewaju early Tuesday morning he walked into traffic, causing an oncoming car to slam its breaks suddenly to avoid hitting him.

Police said Olanrewaju began to yell that he had a gun, while remaining in the middle of the road. After several minutes of refusing to listen to police orders, he was apprehended, police said.

Olanrewaju was sprayed with pepper-spray, but still refused to obey officer’s orders, police said. Olanrewaju attempted to punch the officer who grabbed him, and the officer used a Tazer gun, which failed to subdue him twice.

According to authorities, the Tazer gun had no effect because Olanrewaju’s jacket was very thick. However, a K-9 Unit responded to the scene and police canine “Tio” helped take Olanrewaju into custody.

Olanrewaju received injuries to his upper right leg from dog bites and he was treated at a local hospital. He was booked into the Tempe City Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault against a police officer and obstructing a thoroughfare, according to authorities.

No other injuries were reported.  No further details were available late Tuesday.

The two Democrats running to unseat Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas this fall will go head-to-head in their first debate tonight in Tempe.

Gerald Richard, a former Phoenix police administrator, and Tim Nelson, a former chief counsel to the governor, will meet at 7 p.m. at Changing Hands Bookstore for the first of four public debates that will take place this month.

Richard and Nelson will talk about the role the Valley’s chief prosecutor plays in public safety, as well as how best to manage the office, which is one of the largest law firms in the state. Both have built their campaigns on criticizing Thomas, who is running for re-election. But they have struggled to distinguish themselves from each other, often taking similar stances on issues such as illegal immigration and spending. Tonight is expected to be the first chance the candidates have to stand out on the issues.

The event is open to the public and the Tribune will be on hand to cover it.

July 7th, 2008, 12:11 pm by Katie McDevitt

During the Tempe fireworks display this year only four collisions occurred on the Loop 202 compared to 10 last year.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said all four crashes were caused by inattentive drivers who were watching the fireworks.  Two of the collisions resulted in DUI arrests.

Police conducted rolling traffic breaks in both directions on the freeway when the fireworks began.  Officials said this helped drivers slow down, pay more attention and keep the flow of traffic moving.
