DUI patrols rolling on Super Sunday

Cops will be on the lookout on Super Bowl Sunday for drunks behind the wheel.
According to Tempe police spokeswoman Katie McDevitt, a task force made up of East Valley police departments from Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, DPS, Tempe and Scotsdale, will be patrolling from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. during the heightened festivities of the Super Bowl.
“We’re being proactive and doing our part to ensure a safe weekend,” McDevitt said. “We want people to come down to Tempe and enjoy themselves, but we just ask that they do so responsibly and lawfully.”

Tempe police want help finding teen’s killer

Authorities on Sunday asked for the public’s help in finding the man who stabbed a teenager to death over the weekend in north Tempe.

Police said David Lopez, 19, died after he was stabbed in a fight about 6:30 p.m. Saturday at an apartment complex in the 800 block of East McKellips Drive.

The suspect, a man in his 20s, ran away before police arrived, according to department spokesman Sgt. Steve Carbajal. Investigators had little other information to go on.

Police asked anyone with information to call the department at (480) 350-8311.

Tempe police arrest two murder suspects

Two East Valley men suspected in the shooting death of a Tempe resident have been arrested, police said.
Roy Bigelow, 46, and Darren Cooney, 42, were wanted in connection with a Dec. 15 homicide at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of East 8th Street. In that incident, 28-year-old Frank Daniel Demedio Jr. was shot to death.
Tempe police spokesman Sgt. Steve Carbajal said the investigation revealed Demedio argued with the two over a drug debt before Bigelow shot him. It wasn’t immediately known what was owed to whom.
Cooney was arrested in west-central Mesa on Tuesday afternoon; Mesa police took Bigelow, driving an allegedly stolen car, into custody early Wednesday.
Bigelow and Cooney were booked into jail on counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery and burglary, Carbajal said.
According to police records, was Tempe’s fourth homicide of 2008.

Fatal Tempe fire still under investigation

Tempe authorities are still investigating a weekend apartment fire.
A 58-year-old woman was killed in the early-morning blaze at the Hidden Glen apartments, 818 W. 3rd St. A cause has not yet been determined, fire department spokesman Mike Reichling said.
The woman was found by her front door, apparently overcome as she fled the fire.
Her apartment did have a smoke detector, but Reichling said he did not know if it worked.
Authorities have yet to release the victim’s name.

Man gets wet, gets arrested

An early-morning fall into a swimming pool led to the weekend arrest of a man by Tempe police.
Jonathan Tobin, 21, was taken into custody shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday. At the time, he was dripping wet and shirtless while wearing inside-out jeans and two towels.
Authorities said Tobin got the towels – and got wet - by unlawfully entering a residence in the 1200 block of West 11th Street. He allegedly fell into the pool there, and then stole some towels
After Tobin left, police found him nearby at 11th Street and Margo Drive and arrested him. He was taken to Tempe City Jail and booked for felony residential trespass plus misdemeanors of theft and criminal damage.
Authorities said Tobin was extremely uncooperative with officers during this investigation.

Tempe man arrested after Mill Ave. fracas

A man’s tantrum – with his driver’s license, fists and spit flying – at a Mill Avenue fast-food restaurant ended in his arrest, police said.
Anthony William Newton, 30, of Tempe was booked into city jail Saturday night on counts of felony aggravated assault, assault, criminal damage, disorderly conduct and trespassing.
According to police, Newton was inside Jack in the Box, 721 S. Mill Ave., about 10:15 p.m. when he began yelling obscenities. A security guard told Newton to leave, but Newton responded by throwing his license at the guard, along with more yelling and cursing.
Outside the restaurant, Newton punched the guard in the face and broke his radio, which is valued at $1,200.
When police officers arrested Newton, he allegedly said, “What do you think about this?” and spit in an officer’s face.

Mesa woman sentenced for ID theft

A Mesa woman convicted of identity theft recently was sentenced to 6-1/2 years in prison.
Crystal Wright, 30, also must serve two years probation and make financial restitution.
Tempe police said Wright stole a credit card number and charged $7,852 to the victim’s account. She was arrested in March.
In September, she pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft, a class three felony, with one prior felony conviction.

Burglary suspect in Tempe beaten by victim, arrested

An burglary early Thursday in Tempe ended with the suspect beaten and then arrested, police said.
Police said that about 3:30 a.m., Gabriel Saucedo entered a home in the 100 block of West Fifth Street and, when the resident woke, threatened him with a baseball bat and demanded property. Saucedo, 23, held the resident against his will for about five minutes.
But police said the resident, Alex Botsios, ought back and detained Saucedo until police arrived. Investigators said they found signs of forced entry into the residence and missing property.
Police said Saucedo was treated for minor injuries at a hospital. Afterward, he taken to city jail and booked on suspicion of armed robbery and kidnapping.

Tempe police bust 3 suspected heroin dealers

Tempe narcotics officers have arrested three accused dealers of heroin following a three-week investigation, police said Thursday.
Alex Mendivil, 56; Guillermo Gamboa, 45; and Luis Jaramillo, 55, were booked into city jail Tuesday on counts of possession/sale of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Mendivil allegedly sold heroin in the area of Esquer Park and along Apache Boulevard while Gamboa acted as his driver. They were arrested following a vehicle stop in the 2100 block of East Apache Boulevard, and a search of their car turned up two grams of heroin and several hypodermic needles.
Afterward, a search warrant was conducted at Jaramillo’s residence in Tempe. Police said they found there more heroin plus about $2,000 in cash, drug ledgers and drug paraphernalia.

Suspected drunken driver hits three cars before arrest

Tempe police said officers arrested a suspected drunken driver after she crashed into at least three vehicles, including one that was occupied by a child.
Lorraine Aguilar Castaneda, 52, of Tempe was jailed Tuesday on a count of aggravated DUI, three counts of leaving the scene of an accident and one count of endangerment.
Witnesses told police they saw a person driving recklessly northeast of Apache Boulevard and Rural Road.
Castaneda’s vehicle struck another vehicle occupied by a child in a car seat in a parking lot near Lemon Street and Rural, police said. She then traveled south on Terrace Road and hit another vehicle in a parking lot at 1200 E. Spence Ave. before being arrested, police said.
