Search on for San Tan armed robber

Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for an armed man who attempted to rob a San Tan grocery store Wednesday night.
The suspect entered Fry’s Marketplace, 542 E. Hunt Highway, carrying a long gun at about 11 p.m., sheriff’s officials said.
The store manager refused to give the suspect money or the safe security code.
The suspect then took the manager’s keys and attempted to open drawers and cabinets in the customer service area.
However, the suspect did not get away with any money, and no employees or customers were injured.
The suspect is described as black, about 6 feet tall, wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses.
Authorities said the suspect may have driven off in a purple or maroon Chrysler PT Cruiser with a Washington license plate.

Police seek ID in bank robbery

Police are seeking the public’s help to catch a woman suspected of robbing a Gilbert bank last month.

The woman walked into a Chase Bank, 8490 S. Power Road, around 1:20 p.m. on Dec. 12 and handed a teller a note demanding money.

Police believe the woman may have carried a handgun.

She is not yet linked to other area bank robberies, but police have not ruled out the possibility.

The woman was wearing a hat and wig during the robbery. Police believe she is in her 30s.

Man found dead in garage, boy injured

A 4-year-old boy was airlifted to a local hospital Saturday night after breathing toxic fumes from a garage where a man committed an apparent suicide, deputies said.

Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Queen Creek home, located near Hunt Highway and Bella Vista Road, around 6:30 p.m. when the boy’s mother found him overcome by the fumes, deputies said.

Police declined to reveal the relationship between the boy and the 30-year-old man. However, neighbors told ABC 15 News that the man and boy’s mother lived together.

Deputies said the boy was not in the garage during the incident, but he breathed fumes that went into the house.

Police said the man died from asphyxiation but declined to give further details about the death. No other information was immediately available.

Motorcyclist crashes, dies during chase

A motorcyclist crashed and died near east Mesa late Tuesday as he was being chased by Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies. The identity of the motorcyclist was not released.

Sheriff’s spokesman detective Aaron Douglas said deputies tried to pull over the motorcyclist a little before 9:30 p.m. near Rittenhouse and Hawes roads. “They wanted to stop him and apparently he took off,” Douglas said. A chase ensued and ended about 4 miles away at Power and Williams Field roads when the motorcyclist crashed. He died at the scene, Douglas said.

Sex offenders move to EV

Authorities have announced three new sex offenders in the East Valley.

Kevin R. Rogers, 51, is moving to 9252 E. Broadway Rd #67 in Mesa. Rogers was convicted of three counts of indecent/lewd acts with a child, three counts of forcible oral sodomy and one count of forcible anal sodomy in Dec. 1987 in Oklahoma for incidents involving three boys. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and was released in Sept. 2004. Rogers had previously been convicted of sexual assault in 1979 in Nebraska, where he was placed on five years probation.

Francisco Villalobos, 39, is moving to the 17900 block of East Mews Road in Queen Creek. Villalobos was convicted of kidnapping in May of 1992 and sentenced to 10 years in prison in Arizona. Deputies reported that Villalobos sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl in 1990 when he was 22 years old.

Shawn Freck, 35, is moving to the 22200 block of East Via Del Palo in Queen Creek. Deputies said Freck was convicted of kidnapping, sexual assault and aggravated assault in July 1997 for sexually assaulting a woman he knew in Sept. 1996.

Three arrested in string of pharmacy robberies

Three men have been arrested in connection with a string of robberies at East Valley pharmacies where armed assailants took narcotics such as Oxycontin, court records show.A tip to Silent Witness led to the arrests of the men, who police have linked to at least four pharmacy robberies in Chandler, Mesa and Ahwatukee Foothills since January. In one of the incidents, suspicious pharmacy employees were dialing police when three men burst into their Chandler CVS store, held the pharmacist at gunpoint and ordered him to open the safe containing narcotics.Police following a tip found empty drug bottles in one man’s trash and then made the arrests in the past several days. School: Florence High trio attempts robbery

Three Florence High School students allegedly were involved in an attempted armed robbery at a local business on Thursday, according to a letter sent home to parents from Florence High School administrators on Friday.Off duty Department of Corrections officers foiled the robbery and alerted the Florence Police Department.But two of the suspects fled the scene and returned to school with police in pursuit. They were taken into custody at school. No weapons were found.

Woman goes to prison for stealing from tribe

An Ohio woman was sentenced in U.S. District Court Tuesday to five months in prison and five months in home detention for embezzling monies from the Gila River Indian Tribe.Sheila Marie Dryden, 54, of Chillicothe, Ohio, pleaded guilty on Feb. 20 to Embezzlement from an Indian Tribal Organization, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.As pastor of the Siloam Indian Baptist Church, Dryden received a grant from the Gila River Indian Tribe of $122,946 to construct a community building.Instead, prosecutors said she and her former husband, Timothy Isabell, used $96,253 of the funds for personal expenses in April 2001.Isabell pleaded guilty to embezzlement in Sept. 2006 and was sentenced to three months in prison and three months of home detention, prosecutors said.Each was instructed to pay $96,253 in restitution to the tribe.

Armed robbery at Ahwatukee Foothills pharmacy

Phoenix police said three men robbed an Ahwatukee Foothills pharmacy early Friday morning at gunpoint.Police got a call at 4:10 a.m. from the CVS pharmacy at 4657 E. Chandler Blvd., where police said three men displayed two handguns and ordered four employees to comply with their demands.A pharmacist was ordered to open a safe and hand over prescription drugs including Oxycontin, while three store employees were forced to lie on the floor.Police suspect the men also stole from one of the victims and took cigarettes from the store. Assaults on the employees were caught by CVS surveillance cameras.Police ask anyone with information to call them at (602) 262-6141 or Silent Witness at (480) 948-6377.
