A police dog caught a suspect in the stick-up of a Mesa convenience store early Thursday.
The unidentified juvenile suffered puncture wounds to his upper right thigh when K-9 Jake bit him, police said. After treatment at Banner Baywood Medical Center, the suspect was arrested and booked.
According to police, around 1:30 a.m. a white male carrying a black backpack and wearing a grey hooded zip-up sweatshirt and a black bandana entered the Shell station at 6806 E. Brown Road. He displayed a handgun, took money and cigarettes, and then ran north on Power Road.
Responding police saw the suspect running through the parking lot of a church in the 1400 block of North Power Road. Soon after, police found the backpack, which contained the money, cigarettes and a pellet handgun.
While searching the east side of 67th street between Princess Drive and McLellan Road, an officer and Jake flushed the suspect from his hiding location.
The suspect ran west to 1508 N. 67th St., where he attempted to hide in a child’s tree house. Jake again found the suspect and made the capture.

The incident occurred at around 11:15 p.m. in the 2000 block of West Southern Avenue. Police saw two men they believe were acting suspiciously get into a car and leave a parking lot. Officers observed that the car didn’t have a rear license plate. They followed the vehicle and requested a marked patrol car to their location to make a stop on the vehicle. While following the vehicle, its driver turned onto West Eighth Avenue from Dobson Road traveling westbound. As officers followed the vehicle in the area of South El Dorado, they heard what sounded like a gunshot behind them. They observed a vehicle approach them from the rear quickly and heard another gunshot and saw the flash of a gun. The officers put out a request for assistance and continued west into Tempe on East Balboa. The vehicle the shots were fired from fled from the scene as well as the original vehicle they were following. The officers stopped at the dead end of East Balboa at South George Drive. While waiting for marked units, the original vehicle police followed returned on East Balboa and was stopped by uniformed officers. The individuals from the vehicle were detained for the investigation. No one was injured and no arrests have been made. FBI releases photos, asks for help on bank lettersOctober 23rd, 2008, 1:40 pm by Nick R. Martin
The FBI has released a photograph of one of the letters that helped ignite a bioterrorism scare at financial institutions and banks yesterday nationwide, including at two banks in the East Valley. “Steal tens of thousands of people’s money and not expect repercussions,” said the letters. “It’s payback time. What you just breathed in will kill you within 10 days. Thank (unreleased) and the FDIC for your demise.” All the letters were mailed from Amarillo, Texas, according to the FBI. In total, some 50 letters were sent to banks, the FDIC and the U.S. Office of Thrift Supervision. The language in each is identical, the FBI said. The photographed letter was sent to a Chase Bank in Colorado. The FBI is asking anybody with information about the language or letters to call (800) 225-5324 or (800) CALLFBI. UPDATE (2 p.m.): In a news release sent out this afternoon, the local office of the FBI says the powder sent to the Chase Banks in Arizona has been tested and was found to be non-hazardous. Veteran judge OK’d City Hall raid; Arpaio gets madOctober 18th, 2008, 11:50 am by Nick R. Martin
I called Donahoe’s office yesterday to ask for comment on the warrant, but his assistant said he declined to talk. On another note, we were able to pull an excerpt from my interview yesterday with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was pretty mad at the criticism he’d been getting because of the raid. (See the link at the bottom of the post.) He continued to defend the raid and the deputies who conducted it, even in the face of Mesa’s accusations that one of the deputies had lied to a Mesa police officer about the operation. The interview came at the end of a day when Arpaio had already answered dozens of questions at a news conference and also appeared nationally on Fox News. What you won’t hear in this excerpt is Arpaio’s apology near the end of the interview for going a bit nuclear earlier. “It’s been a long day,” he told me. |
