Mesa police: Shots fired during stop

October 28th, 2008, 11:46 am by John Leptich

Two Mesa plain clothes police officers in an unmarked vehicle working a special crime detail believe they may have been shot at Monday night.

The incident occurred at around 11:15 p.m. in the 2000 block of West  Southern Avenue. Police saw two men they believe were acting suspiciously get into a car and leave a parking lot. Officers observed that the car didn’t have a rear license plate. They followed the vehicle and requested a marked patrol car to their location to make a stop on the vehicle.

While following the vehicle, its driver turned onto West Eighth Avenue from Dobson Road traveling westbound. As officers followed the vehicle in the area of South El Dorado, they heard what sounded like a gunshot behind them. They observed a vehicle approach them from the rear quickly and heard another gunshot and saw the flash of a gun. The officers put out a request for assistance and continued west into Tempe on East Balboa. The vehicle the shots were fired from fled from the scene as well as the original vehicle they were following. The officers stopped at the dead end of East Balboa at South George Drive.  While waiting for marked units, the original vehicle police followed returned on East Balboa and was stopped by uniformed officers.

The individuals from the vehicle were detained for the investigation.  No one was injured and no arrests have been made.

FBI releases photos, asks for help on bank letters

October 23rd, 2008, 1:40 pm by Nick R. Martin

The FBI has released a photograph of one of the letters that helped ignite a bioterrorism scare at financial institutions and banks yesterday nationwide, including at two banks in the East Valley. “Steal tens of thousands of people’s money and not expect repercussions,” said the letters. “It’s payback time. What you just breathed in will kill you within 10 days. Thank (unreleased) and the FDIC for your demise.”

All the letters were mailed from Amarillo, Texas, according to the FBI. In total, some 50 letters were sent to banks, the FDIC and the U.S. Office of Thrift Supervision. The language in each is identical, the FBI said. The photographed letter was sent to a Chase Bank in Colorado.

The FBI is asking anybody with information about the language or letters to call (800) 225-5324 or (800) CALLFBI.

UPDATE (2 p.m.): In a news release sent out this afternoon, the local office of the FBI says the powder sent to the Chase Banks in Arizona has been tested and was found to be non-hazardous.

October 23rd, 2008, 10:02 am by Mike Branom

Mesa police are searching for three men suspected in a home invasion robbery.
One victim sustained minor injuries during Wednesday evening’s incident at an apartment in the 1000 block of South Stewart Street, north of Fiesta Mall. Also, a laptop computer was stolen.
According to police, around 6:40 p.m. a man known by the name “Meteo” arrived at victims’ apartment looking for an ex-roommate of theirs. Meteo said the ex-roommate owed him money for drugs.
After a few minutes, Meteo unlocked the apartment’s front door, pulled out a black handgun and demanded money. That’s when the two other suspects entered.
The three men assaulted the two occupants before fleeing, with Meteo grabbing the laptop on the way out.
Police describe Meteo as a white male in his 30s, 6 feet tall with a skinny build and short brown hail. He was wearing khaki shorts.
The second suspect is a white male in his late 20s, 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, with his shaggy brown hair in a ponytail. He was wearing a large blue T-shirt and jeans.
The third man is Hispanic, also in his late 20s, standing 5-feet-10-inches tall and weighing 180 pounds. He wore a white tank top and silver basketball shorts, and had tattoos on his face near both eyes.

Veteran judge OK’d City Hall raid; Arpaio gets mad

October 18th, 2008, 11:50 am by Nick R. Martin

A lot of people are asking who signed off on the possibly unprecedented nighttime search warrant that allowed sheriff’s deputies to bust into Mesa City Hall and other buildings on Thursday. The answer is Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Gary Donahoe (pictured). He has been on the superior court bench since 2000 and is widely seen as the next in line to succeed the chief criminal judge in the county, Anna Baca.

I called Donahoe’s office yesterday to ask for comment on the warrant, but his assistant said he declined to talk.

On another note, we were able to pull an excerpt from my interview yesterday with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was pretty mad at the criticism he’d been getting because of the raid. (See the link at the bottom of the post.) He continued to defend the raid and the deputies who conducted it, even in the face of Mesa’s accusations that one of the deputies had lied to a Mesa police officer about the operation.

The interview came at the end of a day when Arpaio had already answered dozens of questions at a news conference and also appeared nationally on Fox News. What you won’t hear in this excerpt is Arpaio’s apology near the end of the interview for going a bit nuclear earlier. “It’s been a long day,” he told me.

Arpaio blows up in this 2-minute excerpt from an interview about the raids at Mesa City Hall (1.86mb MP3).
