Gilbert woman sentenced for theft of $700,000

August 4th, 2008, 4:07 pm by Katie McDevitt

A Gilbert woman has been sentenced to six years in prison and four years of supervised probation for stealing more than $700,000 from a Mesa business, while managing its finances.

Deborah Lynn Ward, 47, pleaded guilty on April 29 to theft and forgery and was sentenced Thursday.

According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, Ward managed the finances for Superstition Crushing, a family-owned company, and wrote many checks to herself over a year’s time. Officials said she covered up the thefts by moving money from the tax-withholding bank accounts to the company operating account. This left the company vulnerable to IRS penalties for failure to pay withholding taxes.

After sifting through a computer library of 30,000 stored pictures, police found images depicting child pornography on a computer belonging to a man charged with taking photos under the skirt of a 14-year-old in Gilbert Wednesday, police say.

Gilbert police arrested Bradley Allen Trotter in a Wal-Mart parking lot at Loop 202 and Williams Field Road close to 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.  After searching Trotter’s home, police found several images depicting child porn in a library of 30,000 images Trotter had stored on his computer drives.

Trotter has been charged with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, according to a Gilbert police release.
Sgt. Mark Marino said Trotter tried to flee Wednesday after he noticed police vehicles in Wal-Mart’s parking lot, but he was eventually apprehended.

Gilbert police said that Trotter may have other victims and believe he visited several Wal-Mart stores and a Target store before his arrest.

He visited a Mesa Wal-Mart at McKellips and Greenfield roads on the day of his arrest at 11 a.m. Police believe that Trotter went to a Wal-Mart and Target in Tolleson on Tuesday.
