The Mesa Police Department is seeking assistance in identifying a man who has committed three robberies while riding a motorcycle. On three occasions during August and September, a man has robbed three women in a business parking lot. In all three incidents the mant rode his motorcycle in the parking lot of the business, approached the victims and, while still on the motorcycle, took their purses. In one of the incidents, the victim was dragged a short distance while the man attempted to pull the purse away from her.
The man is described as white, in his mid 20s, short dark hair and clean shaven. In one incident he was seen wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans with a black baseball cap. He has used a black sports- style motorcycle. Anyone with information is urged to call Silent Witness at (480) 948-6377.

A Mesa man faces charges of violation of an order of protection, resisting arrest, endangerment and aggravated assault after a scuffle with police at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Two Mesa officers arrived in the 6700 block of East Superstition Springs Boulevard to investigate a report of an order of protection. During the investigation, probable cause was established for arrest of Todd Birch. He arrived on the scene as the officers were still there and refused to exit his vehicle. When Birch finally did, he was holding his 13 month old baby boy and refused to put him down. Officers advised Birch, 35, that he was under arrest and he wrapped his hands around the child in a bear hug and laid on top of the hood of a car.
Officers got the child safely away from Birch but, as they attempted to put him into custody, he fought with both officers and tried to get back into his vehicle. The officers, who received minor scrapes, tazed Birch and took him into custody. Birch also suffered minor scrapes.

Mesa police arrested Shawn Miller on suspicion of burglary and impersonating an officer Thursday evening. At around 8 p.m., residents of a house in the 2100 block of West Jibsail Loop returned to find their property broken into and several electronic items missing. The victims called police and while checking the house were confronted by a man later identified as Miller, who was in the house with gloves on. Miller told the victims to hang up the phone and showed them a wallet badge. He identified himself as detective Miller and said he was on an investigation. The victims didn’t believe him, and he ran from the house, with the victims chasing him.
Police found Miller when an officer working in an unmarked vehicle located a man who matched the suspect’s description. Police found Miller with a badge wallet that he initially said wasn’t his. They found Miller’s identification inside the wallet. Police said Miller has an outstanding felony burglary warrant.
During the investigation, Miller admitted entering the residence and taking a laptop computer. He directed detectives to a vehicle belonging to his wife near the crime scene. Inside was the laptop, along with numerous burglary tools.

At around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Mesa police responded to a possible shoplifting in progress at Blockbuster video, 2706 E. University Drive. Three men got into their white Chevy S-10 Extreme pickup as an officer approached it on foot. The driver backed out of his parking space and drove at a high rate of speed toward the officer, who jumped to get out of the way of the vehicle.
The men, who had three small children in their vehicle, are described as approximately 50 years old wearing a gray T-shirt and glasses, approximately 20 years old wearing a black T-shirt, and approximately 20 years old wearing a red Cleveland Cavaliers basketball jersey and khaki pants.
They are being sought on changes of aggravated assault on a police officer.

A Phoenix police officer shot and wounded a man who held a burglar at gunpoint inside his home Wednesday night in Phoenix.
Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the incident occurred as officers responded to calls in an east Phoenix neighborhood about shots fired, a wounded man acting strangely after being let into a good Samaritan’s home, and a break-in at a nearby home.
According to police, arriving officers near 32nd Street and Osborn Road found a screaming woman who left her home with two children while her husband confronted an intruder. Thompson said officers went into the home, ordered everyone out and saw an armed resident coming down a hallway. One officer shot the 35-year-old resident several times.
Officers found a suspected burglar in the room the resident came out of. Police took that man into custody with injuries to one of his legs. The cause of his injuries isn’t known.
Both men were treated at a local hospital. Their injuries aren’t considered life-threatening, according to police.

Chandler police are searching for a man who Tuesday afternoon robbed the Chase Bank branch inside Fry’s at 1950 W. Ray Road. The man entered the bank area, approached a teller, demanded money with specific instructions not to activate the alarm, and threatened the teller with a weapon if she didn’t comply. Once the man got money, he fled on foot. The case is under investigation.
The robber is described as a white or Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, 165 pounds, medium build, wearing a white shirt, with blue elbow-length sleeves with white stripes on the blue sleeves, blue jeans and black shoes.

Phoenix police officer Barry Scott is in critical condition at a local hospital after participating in a fund-raising event called “Guns n Hoses” held Friday at Fort McDowell Casino.
The event was a series of boxing matches run by a private business that chose the 100 Club, an organization that benefits public safety officers and firefighters, as the charity tfor donations from the event.
After his boxing match with a firefighter, Scott collapsed and was taken to a hospital. He was off duty at the time of the incident.
Scott, 22, served with the U.S. military in Iraq for approximately 18 months before joining the Phoenix Police Department in May 2007. He has a wife and infant child.

Chandler police early Saturday found a man outside the Chandler Public Library who, after arguing with his girlfriend at their mobile home, they said tried to overdose on methamphetamine.
Officers found Jose Parra, 29, passed out on the west side of the library. He was taken to a hospital, treated and released into police custody. Chandler police spokesman Dave Ramer said Parra had an outstanding drug-related warrant.
Ramer said a K-9 unit located Parra at about 3:30 a.m. He was unconscious. Ramer said if police hadn’t gotten to Parra when they did, it’s likely he would have died.
Police received a call at around 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the 400 block of East Erie Street about a couple arguing. The woman told police that her boyfriend, Parra, was upset and kicked wood siding on the trailer and cut electrical cords to security lighting as he left. He also took her cell phone. Having the phone helped police in finding Parra, according to Ramer.

At around 5:15 p.m. Sunday, Mesa police officers responded to a call about a 28 year-old man being threatened with a knife in the 400 block of East Brown Road. Police said the incident occurred because of a standing neighbor dispute. Cruz Mario Gonzales left before officers arrived. He was located walking away from the scene in the area of 10th Street and Date. Gonzales, 20, took a fighting stance with the officers, then fled. Police caught him after a short foot pursuit without incident. He was was identified as the person with a knife and was placed into custody. A records check revealed a U.S. Marshal’s office warrant for Gonzales’ arrest for probation violation and a weapons offense.

Mesa police arrested Andre Smith at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday on charges of aggravated assault after they responded to 161 W. Main St. regarding a stabbing. The victim, a 49 year-old female, received a 2-inch shallow cut to the left front of her neck. The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The victim and two witnesses told police they knew Smith, 51. He fled on a bicycle. Officers received information that Smith lives at a halfway house in the area of Broadway Road and Spencer. A K-9 officer spotted Smith and he was arrested.
