Gilbert crash hospitalizes elderly man

A two-car crash in Gilbert Thursday morning sent a 78-year-old man to the hospital.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Higley Road and the entrance to Banner Gateway Hospital just before 10:30 a.m., authorities said.

A car exiting the hospital smashed into the side of another car.

The injured man did not suffer life-threatening injuries. He was flown to Scottsdale Osborn hospital for chest pains.

Gilbert boy in serious condition after near drowning

A 14-month-old boy remains in serious condition after he was found floating face up in a Gilbert home’s pool on Tuesday.

The boy’s mother found the glass sliding door open and the boy in the water just after noon when she returned to her home near Queen Creek and Power roads, Gilbert Fire Capt. Rob Duggan said.

The boy was in the care of grandparents, and it’s not clear how he fell in.

However, the boy could have been in the water for up to 10 minutes, Duggan said.

The mother was able to revive the boy with CPR.

He was taken to a Gilbert hospital and later transferred to the pediatric unit at Banner Desert Medical Center.

 “This is the kind of case where we won’t find out how he’s going to end up for days or weeks,” Duggan said.

Gilbert police arrest burglars

Police arrested two men early Tuesday who were caught burglarizing vehicles in a Gilbert neighborhood, police said.

Justin Goode, 19, and Varian Vital, 18, were caught near Higley and Williams Field roads just before 2:30 a.m.

The men are also linked to the burglary of a Gilbert home’s entertainment system , police said.

A BB gun was found their vehicle. However, police have not received any reports of criminal damage.

Gilbert school locked down after gun call

A Gilbert school was put in lockdown Wednesday morning after police received a call about a man with a gun in the area.

Ben Franklin Charter School, 320 East Warner Road, was closed as a precaution. But there was no connection between the school and the armed man, police said.

Police didn’t find anyone near the school.

However, police did locate a person near Val Vista and Elliot who matched the description.

Officers did not arrest him because they determined that he had not committed a crime.

Big screen burglars

Police are searching for a two men who broke into a Gilbert home Monday night and stole a big screen TV.

A resident woke up about 10:30 p.m. at a home near Val Vista Drive and Elliot Road to find two  men, police said.

The men fled and drove away in a brown pickup truck.

Police said the suspects didn’t force entry into the home. The front door was unlocked.

Police: Woman hits motorcyclist, drives away

Police arrested a 47-year-old Gilbert woman Tuesday evening who’s suspected of driving drunk, crashing into a motorcyclist and driving away.

Witnesses told officers that Anne Murphy Smith hit the motorcyclist at Val Vista and Williams Field roads just after 6 p.m., police said.

After she drove away, witnesses followed her and called police, who caught up with her near Lindsay and Williams Field roads.

Smith was booked on suspicion of aggravated assault, DUI and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
The motorcyclist suffered minor injuries and was also arrested for driving with a suspended license.

Beware of the skateboard robber

A 53-year-old woman walking to a Gilbert bank on Monday morning was robbed by a man riding a skateboard.
The suspect rode up to the woman near Cooper and Baseline roads just after 10 a.m. when he assaulted her and took her deposit.
Police immediately searched the area, but the man evaded officers.

Rollover injures pregnant woman

A pregnant woman was flown to the hospital Thursday afternoon after her vehicle rolled over during a crash in Gilbert.
The crash occurred at Warner Road and Val Vista Drive about 1 p.m. Further information wasn’t available
The woman did not suffer life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital as a precaution, authorities said.

9-year-old boy injured in Gilbert crash

A two-car crash at a Gilbert intersection Wednesday evening sent a 9-year-old boy too the hospital with a broken leg.
The two vehicles collided at Val Vista Drive and Warner Road about 5 p.m. when a pickup truck turning left was hit by a car traveling through the intersection.
The boy was flown to a hospital. Police did not release who is at fault in the crash.

Search on for San Tan armed robber

Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for an armed man who attempted to rob a San Tan grocery store Wednesday night.
The suspect entered Fry’s Marketplace, 542 E. Hunt Highway, carrying a long gun at about 11 p.m., sheriff’s officials said.
The store manager refused to give the suspect money or the safe security code.
The suspect then took the manager’s keys and attempted to open drawers and cabinets in the customer service area.
However, the suspect did not get away with any money, and no employees or customers were injured.
The suspect is described as black, about 6 feet tall, wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses.
Authorities said the suspect may have driven off in a purple or maroon Chrysler PT Cruiser with a Washington license plate.
