Cops sponsoring Habitat for Humanity home

A Chandler police union has contributed $10,000 to sponsor a Habitat for Humanity house at 150 W. Fairview St. in Chandler and will be working on the structure Saturday.

The home is being built for LaTricia Quintero and her three children — Vanessa, 9, Vincent, 5, and Veontre, 1.

Quintero is a preschool teacher and loves to spend time with her family, playing board games and hide and seek, and watching movies. She said in a press release that having her own home has been a dream of hers.

Chandler police officers with the Chandler Law Enforcement Association, their families and civil employees will begin work at 6:30 a.m. and conclude about 2 p.m.

Police nab Baskin-Robbins robber

A man who police say robbed a Baskin-Robbins ice cream store at 2487 S. Gilbert Road on Tuesday afternoon in Gilbert was captured after a short foot chase.

At 12:34 p.m., the man had walked into the store, displayed his handgun and demanded money from the cash register, said police spokesman Sgt. Mark Marino.

After he got the money he left on foot, but was spotted by a Gilbert police officer a short distance from the store, Marino said.

Man sleeping in road arrested

Authorities arrested a 44-year-old man Monday in Chandler for lying in the roadway where he was been sleeping for the past two weeks.Marrietta Leander, a transient, was arrested at 10:48 p.m. at Frye Road and Arizona Avenue where police say he also had an open 24 ounce can of Budweiser, according to a Chandler City Court document.Police wrote in the court document that Leander gets intoxicated and lies in the road. He was almost struck by vehicles numerous times, the document says.Leander was booked into jail on suspicion of walking in the street when a sidewalk was available, having an open container and maintaining a nuisance.

Woman defends self against purse snatcher

A 21-year-old woman foiled an early Thursday morning purse snatching near Applebee’s on Gilbert Road, authorities said.The woman was walking home on Gilbert Road near Baseline Road when Filemon Del Hoyo, 22, of Mesa, ran toward her and asked for a cigarette, then grabbed her purse, said Gilbert police spokesman Lt. Eric Shuhandler.The woman was armed with a knife and attempted to defend herself and cut Del Hoyo, who then fled in a vehicle without the purse.At 12:40 a.m. police officers learned of the robbery and eventually officers found the vehicle and Del Hoyo near Eighth Street and Gilbert Road in Mesa.

Chandler cracks down on speeders

The City of Chandler continues to mount its attack on red-light runners and lead-foot drivers. On Sept. 28 red-light and speed-on-green cameras will be turned on at the intersections of Alma School and Queen Creek roads and Gilbert and Riggs roads. For 30 days most motorists will receive a warning ticket. The exception is anyone driving 20 mph or more over the posted speed limit. Those drivers will receive a ticket and face a fine. Starting Oct. 29, all drivers caught traveling at 11 mph or more over the speed limit will be ticketed. On July 25, the Chandler Police Department began using its first speed-on-green camera at Arizona Avenue and Ray Road. The city has said it will put up 12 speed-on-green cameras.

Car donated to Shevy Wright family

The mother of Shevy Wright — a 9-year-old boy who Chandler police swore in as one of their own — recently received a car donated to make sure he can get to and from medical appointments.Shevy was diagnosed in December with a terminal brain tumor. It was his wish to become a police officer and on July 18 Chandler police made his wish come true.Since then, he has been receiving cancer treatments at the Envita Natural Medical Center in Scottsdale. He is being sponsored by the Fullness of Life Foundation.And on Sept. 14, the Chandler Lieutenants and Sergeants Association together with the Chandler Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 14 presented the Toyota Corolla to his mother, Heather Wright.The car with 45,000 miles was purchased and donated by Baxter Chapman, president of Chapman Auto Dealerships, and Chipper Dossey of Roy Dossey plumbing in Chandler.Other donations paid for one year of auto insurance and $1,000 worth of gas cards.

Zia robber takes Cheech and Chong incense burner

A man armed with a knife robbed a Zia Record Exchange and stole CDs, DVDs, a poster, clothing and a Cheech and Chong incense burner Wednesday in Chandler.About 11:43 a.m. Eric Zamora, 31, of Chandler, fled from the store at 1940 Chandler Blvd. with the merchandise only to be caught within minutes at Starbucks, said Chandler police spokesman Sgt. Rick Griner.Griner said Zamora had been shoplifting the goods when he was confronted by a store worker and pulled out the knife.After he escaped Chandler police set up a perimeter around the parking lot and shopping complex and caught him at 11:56 a.m. at Starbucks.

Cousins arrested for Wal-Mart shoplifting spree

Two cousins were recently arrested for filling a U-Haul with stolen goods totaling $1,647 taken from Wal-Mart stores in Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa, a court document says.Leanndraine Michelle Estrada, 22, of Superior, and Erica Francine Jimenez, 19, of Gilbert, were caught Monday at Wal-Mart, 2750 E. Germann Road in Chandler, according to a San Marcos Justice Court document.Estrada rented the U-Haul and was moving to Florida. She told police she needed the goods for her baby and a yet to be born child, the document says.They admitted to having no intention of paying for the merchandise which was recovered from the back of the U-Haul.She was alone at the first stop in Mesa where she selected a tote bag and filled it with clothes, toilet paper and paper towels before leaving.She then picked up Jimenez and they went to the Gilbert store where they took household items and left without paying.The last stop was the Chandler store where they put Halloween decorations in a bag and Jimenez put a cradle in a cart.When they exited the store an employee asked for a receipt and they kept walking. But store employees eventually detained them until Chandler police arrived.Estrada was booked into jail on suspicion of shoplifting and third-degree criminal trespassing. Jimenez was booked into jail on suspicion of shoplifting.

Man arrested after police say he threw hot dogs, jabbed girlfriend in eye

Police are accusing a Chandler man of drinking a half a bottle of Everclear, arguing with his girlfriend, kicking out a sliding glass door, throwing hot dogs all over the kitchen, and jabbing her eye with his finger.Armando Clark, 31, was arrested at 2 a.m. Tuesday and booked into jail on suspicion of disorderly conduct and assault for the fight that took place Monday night, according to City of Chandler court documents.Clark ran from his home Monday in the 1100 block of East Boston Court where the argument took place, but was arrested hours later when he returned to the residence.
