Police: Suspect killed after attempted Chandler robbery

December 20th, 2008, 9:47 pm · 6 Comments · posted by Devon Hersom

An armed man attempting to rob a Chandler jewelry store died from a gunshot wound resulting from a gun battle between the suspect and store employees, police say.

The store manager was shot in the face during the battle, but he is expected to survive, according to Chandler police Det. David Ramer. The department has not released the identities of anyone involved in the incident.

Two male suspects entered the Christopher Diamond Jewelry store, located near the intersection of Chandler Blvd. and the Loop 101, at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Ramer said. One of the men was armed and told the store owner, his wife and their adult son that he was going to rob the store.

When the store manager pulled a gun, the suspect shot him, Ramer said. A resulting gun battle left the suspect mortally wounded but he was able to flee in a stolen pick-up truck to the area of Broadway and the Loop 101.

The suspect’s vehicle came to a stop near the intersection and the second man fled on foot while the wounded suspect remained inside the truck. The wounded man was transported to an area hospital where he later died, Ramer said.

The second suspect was later arrested in the surrounding area, Ramer said.

No one else was injured during the shooting but witnesses helped police track the suspect’s vehicle by providing a description of the truck, Ramer said.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery ofthe robbery victim.
It has been a good weekend for removing the despicable POS criminals from the gene pool. The Westside lost another dirtbag today, too.

My family and I were driving south down the 101 and saw 7 police cars going in the opposite direction, northbound… we knew something big had happened. When we got off the freeway, we drove past Christopher Diamonds and there were several police vehicles and ambulances in the parking lot of this store. We suspected they had been robbed. My brother told us he heard gunshots while he was at Outback… We started listening to the scanner and followed along as the police were tracking and apprehending the criminal that was on foot. Apparently the robber lost his shoes so he was running around barefoot! They finally found him huddled under a blanket in front of Coronado Crossings apartment complex, I believe. The chopper couldn’t locate this guy, but the dog tracked him down. I’m glad both these perpetrators are off the streets and the owner survived the incident!

We pray the victim is not seriously hurt and thank him for the service to the community keeping the rest of us safe.

Why haven’t we heard the names of the suspects yet and about their prior law breakings? The Public Information Officer (PIO) can provide the information if asked. Was the reporter given the information but chose not to include it in the story? Are the criminals from Chandler or did they invade Chandler like the last group from Coolidge?

It is a shame that law abiding citizens have to take up arms because of all of the crime. I eat at the Einstein Bagels next door all the time; and you never know what can happen at any moment. That is why I decided to get a .45 cal S&W 1911 semiauto pistol that I can carry leagally because of my AZ CCW permit. You can bet that if I saw a crimial shooting in a mall or something that I would definitely intervene to save others. You can’t be in a corner somewhere hoping it will all go away, and it will take at least 10 minutes for the Law to arrive on the scene. Too much time to end up a dead victim!!

Why no updates on a big story like this? What are they NOT telling us? Or has the EV Trib already switched into their 4 day a week routine?

A good one for the good guys. Too bad the other suspect is living. He should have been shot too. Maybe it’s about time gun laws in AZ be changed to allow for concealed carry. They did this in Florida and crime drastically went down along with a number of scumbag criminals.
