At about 6:45 a.m. Monday, an Arizona Department of Public Safety officer was westbound on Interstate 10 near Elliott Road when he pulled his vehicle next to a passenger van that appeared to have more occupants than its capacity. The officer followed the van as it continued west. Other DPS officers responded to assist in tracking the van’s movements.
The van was driving erratically and exited I-10 at 43rd Avenue, then went south. Art some point, the process the van attempted to ram DPS vehicles. Officers then tried to stop the vehicle. The van traveled on several Phoenix city streets before reaching Southern Avenue, where DPS officers ended their pursuit.
At about 7:20 a.m., the van struck a passenger vehicle in the intersection of 27th avenue and Southern, where the van rolled over. Several of occupants of the vehicle ran from the scene. The total number of occupants is believed to have been 21. Through the assistance of Phoenix Police Department’s helicopter and patrol units, Phoenix police apprehend all that fled. The occupants are believed to illegal immigrants.
The driver of the van, along with one occupant, are being held as suspects related to the human smuggling and other criminal violations. The other 19 are being interviewed. If there is no connection with human smuggling they will be turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Are we to surmise that these people might be illegal aliens? There is no mention of it. Oh, that’s right. The Trib would be racially profiling if they allegedly called them illegal aliens. For this, they get an award for best newspaper?

Let’s see..19 ran and two (driver and occupant) stayed with the vehicle. WHY? Probably because it belonged to someone in the drug/smuggling cartel and they don’t like it when their property is damaged.
Guess the ILLEGALS won’t get a refund on the money they paid to be smuggled in, and will have to go back down South and try again! At least (from the article) it doesn’t appear that they needed to suck into our Medical system at this time.

Also in response to cookie, I agree with Bigazonie as well, I don’t believe that this is a matter of racially profiling. It only mentions that they are believed to be illegals (I am assuming they gathered this information from the case itself) rather than flat out saying they are. Also no where in the article did they mention from what country these alleged illegals came from nor their race. It is undeniable that this is a common scenario that happens when a group of illegals get caught.

The original article early this morning did NOT state anything about them being illegal aliens. It also stated that there were 13 people who fled, not 21. I DID read the earlier article.
And by the way, there was also no mention of ICE being involved in any way. They only reported part of the story. Don’t blame me.
Governor hopes photo-radar will eliminate the nuisance of HP officers making such sightings. If these overloaded and unsafe vans aren’t observed by law enforcement, then there isn’t a problem, is there? Driving erratically and 21 occupants? Not a problem. Just so the vehicle wasn’t speeding. That would be bad. Arrested? No problem. Just (maybe) post your bond and please pay your speeding fines before go back (if you have any pending photo-radar citations) since we need the money. Safety? It’s not really that far from Elliot Road to 43rd Avenue, now is it? Let our officers do their job. They are full capable and there is plenty to do. No, wait, we will need to call the 9th floor on that one. Connection to human smuggling? Nah, probably just a Northern Sonora civic club or sister city exchange trip.
Saw this on the News this Morning. Disgusting that this Van(carrying 21 Illegals) plowed into another Car and not one of the 21 Illegals went to check on the welfare of the people in that car. The Ultimate Cowardly act is “Hit and Run” and they should be treated like anyone else that has done this. Couldn’t believe these 20 Illegals were running through the nieghborhood jumping walls into peoples backyard.
