After a 90 minute standoff with a Gilbert SWAT team, police arrested a 49-year-old man outside of his Apache Junction home early Saturday after the suspect shot another man in the shoulder, police say.
The suspect, John Joseph Zeiter, arrived at the victim’s home on the 300 block of South Gibson Street at 10 p.m. Friday and soon the two began to fight, according to Gilbert police Commander Ken Fixel. During the altercation, Zeiter shot 45-year-old Mario Moreno in the shoulder and fled, Fixel said.
Zeiter was found at a home in Apache Junction more than seven hours later by Gilbert police. When he refused to come out of the house, a SWAT team was called to extract him, Fixel said.
Zeiter surrendered to police around 9:30 a.m. and will be booked with two counts of aggravated assault, Fixel said.
Police have not yet determined the cause of the fight, but witnesses said Moreno was renting from a landlord and was about to be evicted from his Gilbert home. Moreno was treated at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn for non-life threatening injuries.
