Phoenix police shoot man who detained burglar

September 18th, 2008, 9:02 am · 29 Comments · posted by John Leptich

A Phoenix police officer shot and wounded a man who held a burglar at gunpoint inside his home Wednesday night in Phoenix.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the incident occurred as officers responded to calls in an east Phoenix neighborhood about shots fired, a wounded man acting strangely after being let into a good Samaritan’s home, and a break-in at a nearby home.

According to police, arriving officers near 32nd Street and Osborn Road found a screaming woman who left her home with two children while her husband confronted an intruder. Thompson said officers went into the home, ordered everyone out and saw an armed resident coming down a hallway. One officer shot the 35-year-old resident several times.

Officers found a suspected burglar in the room the resident came out of.  Police took that man into custody with injuries to one of his legs. The cause of his injuries isn’t known.

Both men were treated at a local hospital. Their injuries aren’t considered life-threatening, according to police.

UUUGGGGHHHHH! After all the talk of ‘don’t use leathal force on those that enter your home unless you MUST’ and ‘make sure to let the person you’re aiming at acknowledge himself’ that gets shoved down your throat at firearms courses the police smuge it all with THIS hypocrisy…

  • How Do You Know It's Hypocrisy?? says:

    You weren’t there, Assur.

  • nailbender says:

Time to call Sheriff Joe to investigate and prosecute the Phoenix officers who shot this hero. Maybe they shot the guy cause he did not allow Phoenix police to help the burglar remove the stolen property from the victims house.

  • gavin says:

I know this guy who was shot mistakenly. Great guy, DUMB COPS!! I hope he sues the heck out of the police dept. Whatever happened to “put down your weapon”…. Shoot first, ask questions later, maybe…

  • BadCopNoDonut says:

Stupid cop. This homeowner will soon be the newest millionaire in Phoenix. Homeowners are now getting shot even when defending their homes. Good call ‘Asur’ and ‘nailbender’. Maybe the homeowner should have shot back– the cop caused worse damage than the burglar.

    Nice shooting….

Trigger happy cop. Should have more training.

I have herd several stories involving Phoenix PD lately. I will bet Phoenix PD will try to cover up the truth. I wonder how this information has leaked out the Good Old Boys club usually makes sure these things don’t hit the media. I have lost all respect for Phoenix PD. I have more training with a firearm and I ‘m not in law enforcement. DUMB COPS!!

What is that second paragraph all about?
What wounded man, who was the Samaritan and is this the same break-in the same place where the resident was shot?
Reads like a television on the spot reporter.

  • me says:

Looks like the old west is back !!!shoot first ask questions later.

  • Jason says:

Gotta love those cops!!! They’re all a bunch of PRICKS!!!!!!!

  • Loser says:

The guy most likely needed a good shooting. Kudos to the officer.

  • p. kenaley says:

Jack Harris sure runs a tight shop. Fire the cop and Jack.

  • very confussed says:

shoot first? no..sounds wrong….what ever happend to a warning like “drop your weapon” i mean this guy has a GREAT law suit…”shot several times” wtf? i got respect for cops…my dad was one fer 30 years….but this is just stupid…fire the trigger happy cop i’m sorry….i mean they could have killed a father of 2 who9 was doing nothing but protecting his family….the wife said her husband had the guy at gun point so the cops knew ahead of time they didn’t need to shoot the man several times…..poor poor police work….its sad really….

  • HigleyPundit says:

Barney Pfife, make way for your brother officer!

  • Common Sense says:

Stupid cop? The man was approaching the police officers while armed, of course he’s going to get shot. Aren’t you taught to put down your weapon when the police arrive so this exact scenario doesn’t happen? Are you NRA members actually teaching gun safety and common sense, or is that just your cover?

Yes Asur, it’s a good rule of thumb to try and kill as few people as possible in your life time.

And yes Annie, if an officer can disable a person with out killing them then they have a great shot.

  • Flyboss says:

Why didn’t the victim shoot the robber. This saves paperwork.

  • Too bad says:

Was the cop Officer Eugene Tackleberry or Frank Drebin?

  • Don Richey says:

there’s not enough information in this short report to start pointing fingers yet. Based on what is said, I’d say the homeowner hasn’ttaken a CCW class. On of the basic rukes on dealing with law enforcement is to understand that they do not know who the criminal is or the homeowner. You do not approach an officer with any weapon in your hand. You identify yourself, keeping your hand clear and visable and follow the officer directions as he evaluates the actual situation. This is a tragic incident, but let the people trained in these issues do their review. as for a notation above, membership in an organization doesn’t mean the person has taken advantage of training programs that are available. Let’s remember, the police have very good training and some officers still make mistakes or poor judgements.

  • Truth says:

Don’t walk down the hallway while armed with police in your residence. Cops don’t know who the hell you are and if you have a gun it’s game on. Good shoot Phx PD. I support you and the officers involved. However, it is a tragic outcome for the innocent male who was shot, but he should have put the gun down before entering the hallway. Just an all around bad situation for all involved….

  • damnhot says:

Sounds like the cops got their info from the Trib before going in to the mans home! Doubt we will ever get the “real” story! Seriously doubt the Phoenix P.D. would enter a home, guns drawn with only the info provided by a blubbering, un-injured, woman! If they did, well Phx, if you’d spend the money on “training” instead of law suits ya might come out ahead!

This is why the Police need to be oversited by us the public. … Police brutality ……alive and living

  • newspaperguy says:

A bit off-topic, but I USED TO have a gun with me in my vehicle for protection. I always told my wife to use it when i needed to be away from the vehicle for even a minute. Just last week a cop came up to my vehicle and opened the door without identifying himself while I was out of sight of the vehicle. Gave my wife an awful scare. All I can say is that he was damn lucky I don’t have my gun anymore.

Just turned on my computer to YAHOO and what do I see but this story plastered on Yahoo’s World Wide Website. It painted a very lousy picture of the Phoenix Police Department “men in blue”. Leaving the impression it is better to be “pistol-whipped” and your valubles stolen and your wife and daughter assualted than to “DEFEND” your home in GOOD OLE PHOENIX. …cause if you try to defend yourself…you have a better chance of being “PLUGGED” by the local “law enforcement” than the …..”PERPS”……..WELCOME TO LIFE IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN

Always put the intruder down then call the cops.

  • Lewisxxxusa says:

Be sure that the body is 100% inside the house before you call the cops.

  • D. Smith says:

Let the wounded man shoot the cop several times and call it even…
