A 14-year-old boy, who police believe has an outstanding felony warrant, choked a Gilbert police officer Monday while authorities were trying to handcuff him, police say.
The teenager was spotted near the intersection of Gilbert and Elliot roads at 3 p.m. by an officer who recognized him as having a felony warrant, according to Gilbert police spokesman Sgt. Mark Marino. After the officer confirmed the warrant, he attempted to handcuff the boy.
The teen fought with the police officer and resisted arrest, eventually breaking free to perform a “choke hold” on the officer, Marino said. The officer, who only received minor injuries, was able to regain control of the situation and placed the teen in handcuffs.
According to Marino, the boy was booked for charges relating to the warrant, aggravated assault of a police officer and resisting arrest.
The boy’s father attempted to help his son during the altercation, but he did not become involved with the fight. No charges were placed against the boy’s father for attempting to interfere.
No information regarding the details of the 14-year-old’s warrant were immediately available.

And why didn’t Mr. Macho Gilbert Police Officer wait for his back-up? He’s lucky the kid didn’t have a gun or a knife and Gilbert isn’t planning a police funeral.
How did the dad “try to help his son during the altercation” but “did not become involved in the fight”? Either he was trying to help his son or not. If so, he should be charged with obstruction of justice.
A 14 year old with a felony warrant?!? Yes, I think the parent should also be charged!!!
The dad should have been helping the cop! What a role model (not!)…
Are you kidding me? why didn’t this kid get flown to a trauma center for severe traumatic injuries? the cop should have put a major “A” whooping on this kid and his father. Freakin 14 yoa kids fighting cops.. what the heck is wrong with people……
I agree. Gilbert Police Officers seem to think they are super cops. As for the parent getting charged that is stupied, this kid is his own entity and parents are not responsible for the bad choices a teenager makes in this day and age. I don’t attend Gilbert PD Funerals, I don’t agree with there policitcs nor methods.
Gilbert PD is another tent city.
Peace Officer Wife
Speaking for Todd “Nancy” Shetland . . . . “Why isn’t this corrupt law enforcement officer being charged with attacking a minor’s hands with his neck. Where is the justice in this boot-jacked state?”
‘…No charges were placed against the boy’s father for attempting to interfere…”
Why not? Both should be in the slammer.
I always wonder why the Gilbert justice system is so ridiculous, and now I know. It’s because of judgmental uptight people like some of you. Only in this stupid town can a 14 year old kid have a FELONY warrant, for what? drugs? stealing? unpaid tickets? It’s pretty funny how all of you sit back and judge the parents as being bad when their whole family and lives are probably ruined now because of this.. From past experiences I know Gilbert police over exaggerate everything, so who knows what really went down..
obviously, the boy has been raised to have no respect for authority, and what is that? father assisted but didn’t interfere with the fight? I’ll bet theres more to this story then meets the eye, or the press……….
Citizen- When you’re not attending fallen officers’ funerals, maybe you could take some night classes. You obviously need them.
That is sad all away around. Very sad for the child, the father and the officer. Kids are going to be the death of our Society one day if they keep doing what they are doing.
STEP UP PARENTS!! IT IS TIME TO RAISE YOUR KIDS!
Citizen - your a moron!
I as a parent take full responsibilty for my sons actions, good or bad, I am the one who raised him.
brooksie - u better watch out pointing fingers and name calling, ever finger u point, there are three pointing right back at u. also, u are sadly mistaken if u think “kids” are or ever will be the problem with our society. ignorant. sad.
You know back in Bible times, kids that behaved like this 14 yr old were stoned to death as to not bring shame to their family and to rid society of corrupt and polluted future citizens…can we start enforcing that again?
If this would have happened in Phoenix, the kid would have been shot before he was apprehended. Step Gilbert, your men need more training. You will never read about a Phoenix officer getting choked in a line of duty. You will, however, hear about innocent people getting shot. Win some, lose some.
