2 Gilbert motorcycle officers collide, one injured

Two Gilbert motorcycle officers collided Thursday morning while responding to another emergency call, authorities say.

According to Gilbert Sgt. Mark Marino, a veteran officer was training another motor officer just before 8 a.m. when they responded to an emergency call for a child experiencing “labored breathing” while in a school bus on Ray Road near Val Vista Drive. The two officers collided while responding, Marino said.

Marino said the veteran officer, who was transferred to the department over three years ago, was slightly injured in the accident, receiving light cuts and bruises. The officer that was in training did not receive injuries and neither of the men were transferred to hospitals.

The 12-year-old boy was transferred to Mercy Gilbert hospital following an asthma attack, said Gilbert Fire spokesman Dan Rush.  During the ride to the hospital, the boy was breathing normally, Rush said.

I bet the trainee though they had to ride like how Ponch and Jon did on the TV show CHIP’s. Side by side. This is rarely done and dangerous.

Motor officers ride in tandem in Northern Az. all the time. It’s the way they are taught to ride. Don’t ask me whyI know.

It’s funny how you guys are bagging on the cops. Next time they should do the speed limit and let the kid die. Hopefully next time it will be one of your kids.

  • Bill says:

    Hey bones,

what do you think the cops were going to do once they got there? I am EMS and I can tell you that they are more of a pain in the rear than helpful. Let them stick to traffic stops and we will save lives.

  • Tzdinu says:

I’m guessing the trainee got points off for this…

  • Shellie says:

What is with everyone… Someone could of gotten hurt and the Kid turned out okay… Why try to make the article about something else.. Nothing better in your life to do?? Sorry EMS but there are many of times the officer are there to help. They can control traffic. Ems can’t and if you can’t get around the traffic, You can’t help save anyone.

This is what happens when a 2 year cop gets promoted to a specialty assignment.

Well, obviously the training officer needs to go back to training also.
I wonder how much damage was done to the motor officers bikes and what the cost is.
If the crash was the fault of anyone of the officers he should be held responsible and i wonder with all the Tickets that Gilbert hands out on a daily basis, was the officer who caused the crash cited? If not he should be because Gilbert doesn’t cut ANYONE a break in any accident.
They write you up and tell you to go to court. But I doubt seriously if Gilbert followed this incident up. Just another cost to the taxpayers for incompetent and poorly trained police officers.

Clean house at the PD starting at the top and work your way down and put more experienced officers in the positions instead of politics and putting the cronies in them.
