Two police officers who accidentally discharged their weapons on July 18 have been disciplined, according to memos the Chandler police department released Thursday.
Detective Ron Kelley was given a letter of reprimand for violating a policy involving handling a firearm in a careless or reckless manner and officer Marc Olivier was suspended for one day without pay for a similar policy violation.
The memo shows Olivier received a harsher penalty because the accidental discharge was the second sustained violation in the past year. Olivier will also be placed on a 90-day re-evaluation.
The memo said Olivier accidentally discharged his rifle while attempting to “clear the weapon after returning from a Special Assignment Unit call out.”
No one was injured in either shooting.
Neither memo explains how the incidents occurred and what caused the officers to accidentally shoot their guns. Police wouldn’t release any additional information.
The Chandler police department didn’t comply with a public records request asking for the internal affairs investigation and only released memos.
