Police use Taser on knife-wielding Gilbert man

September 9th, 2008, 4:49 pm · 7 Comments · posted by Devon Hersom

Police were forced to Taser a Gilbert man armed with a knife Monday evening after they were called to a drunken fight between the man and his brother, police said.
Lawrence De La Cruz, 42, was found by police just after 6 p.m. with a knife in his hand and a bloody arm near Gilbert and Elliot roads, according to Gilbert police Sgt. Mark Marino.
De La Cruz punched a window during the argument with his brother, Marino said, and officers used a Taser on him after he did not comply with police orders.
De La Cruz was then flown to a hospital for treatment of his arm wounds, Marino said.
Investigators are still determining the charges they will recommend be filed against De La Cruz. Alcohol was considered a factor in the incident, Marino said.

Naturally, it was one of our “southern neighbors!”

Most likely from one of the lovely neighborhoods near the train tracks. How about Gilbert spends some money tearing down those eyesores? That would be a good use of my tax dollars.

I live next to these guys and I hate to say it but the taser was necessary! The man was combative and did you see the part where he had a knife? There was more involved than they published, but it was pretty scary. I have to commend the police for getting here so quickly, the man was running down the street with the knife and there are a lot of kids on this street. As for the comment about tearing down these “eyesores” we just bought our house here, and being new to Gilbert were unaware of the neighborhood and it’s issues. I have to say though, until this incident it’s been pretty quiet. I do agree that people in this neighborhood should take more pride in their homes, and I almost wish there was an HOA, so that they would HAVE to comply. Nonetheless, the comment was unnecessary, there are good people in this neighborhood, it’s just the problem houses that give it a bad rep. I have to add that there are plenty of problem areas in the nicer neighborhoods, having money doesn’t buy class or common sense! As for the “southern neighbor” comment, I mean, really? Is that why there was an issue, because of his Hispanic origin? I’m always amazed at how quick people are to judge, if the guys name had been John Smith what would your contribution to the comment section have been? So sad.

Gilbert PD shouldn’t have wasted the taser cartridge and saved 20 bucks and spent .50 cents and shot and killed him with a knife in his hand failing to follow commands. Would have been justified…

Kill the scum bag and save the taxpayers money….

It’s good to hear an eyewitness account that the GPD did a good job on this one. The guys dont always need to be shot hotcopone. I know it would be nice to have the scum bag out of the way and our lives but you know as a cop if you are one and by the articles written in this sorry newspaper thateither way the police seem to lose in these types of cases. Sorry for the run on.

We all know the Gilbert does not have the money to pay anybody right now, they cant even pay their employees as we know from past articles.
