The Labor Day Holiday DUI Task Force netted 21 arrests of motorists on suspicion of driving while impaired at its checkpoint near Thomas and Power roads in Mesa on Monday, raising the number of overall arrests to 664 since Aug. 15.

Monday marked the final day of the DUI checkpoint that began on Aug. 15.

The goal was to crack down on impaired drivers. Overall, there were 1,622 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint in Mesa on Monday alone. That number raised the total of overall stops at checkpoints throughout the East Valley to 13,355, according to information from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

As of Sunday, 55 of the arrests were for underage drinkers and 55 were aggravated DUI arrests, according to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. The number of underage and aggravated DUI arrests from Monday were not available.

An aggravated DUI includes someone driving intoxicated with a suspended driver’s license or with a child in the car under the age of 15 as well as an intoxicated driver who causes a crash.

There were 179 law enforcement agencies throughout the state who participated in DUI checkpoints and the overall arrest numbers will be released Tuesday morning, according to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

Why doesn’t the gov’t. begin to crack down on speeding driver’s?
Their are fixated only on drunk driver’s. Most fatals are caused
by sober driver’s and they know it. Treat the speeders’ like the
dangerous driver’s they are. Start treating them like the drunk
driver. Jail, fines, and several yrs. probation. It could reduce the
    carnage on the public ways.
