The mother is wasn't just in the hospital but a pyschiatric ward for medication. Afterwards, the dad had a relapse. The kids are better off with him than the mother. Also, these things happen all to often all over the valley. Mostly to upclass people. Take a good look around you and I bet you'll find that your neighbors aren't quite as good as you think they are!
