Arrest leads police to cache of stolen property

July 23rd, 2008, 8:59 pm by Eddi Trevizo

The arrest of a suspected shoe thief and a suspected meth dealer helped Mesa police uncover a hoard of stolen possessions, authorities said.

According to Mesa police, over $15,000 worth of stolen tools, as well as numerous passports, social security cards, check books, and credit cards were seized at a home near Warner and Lindsey roads in Gilbert Tuesday afternoon. The property seizure came after police arrested a man suspected of robbing a shoe store on Monday.

Mesa resident Cody Kay Petersen, 37, was arrested on suspicion of robbing two pairs of black Airwalk shoes, black socks, and an undisclosed amount of cash from a Payless ShoeSource store near Southern Avenue and Gilbert Road in Mesa. According to police reports, Peterson threatened to hurt and kill the store clerk if she mentioned the robbery.

Petersen was stopped by police later the same day for an unrelated incident, but was arrested and charged when police realized he matched the description of the shoe thief. Petersen admitted that he was wearing one of the stolen pairs of shoes and that he traded the other pair of shoes, stolen socks, and other previously stolen items to support his meth dependency, according to police records.

In an interview with police, Petersen admitted that he traded stolen items and money for meth at a house near Warner and Lindsey roads in Gilbert, authorities said.

Police arrested Gilbert resident Cory R. Slater, 29, after searching his home and finding several stolen items. The search was conducted Tuesday and yielded several stolen clothing items and the pair of stolen Payless shoes. Other items found in the raid included several tools previously reported stolen, as well as several check books, credit cards, and passports reported missing from other burglaries, officials said.

Slater was faces charges of possession of stolen property, according to authorities, and Petersen faces robbery charges.

Driver takes out telephone pole, flees from scene

July 23rd, 2008, 4:32 pm by Devon Hersom

A 39-year-old truck driver was cited for hit and run Wednesday after he attempted to pull a U-turn on a private driveway and tangled his company truck in telephone wires, shattering the telephone pole, police said.

Chandler police spokesman David Ramer said the man, Antonio Pena, stopped at a Circle K gas station near the intersection of Fairview Street and Arizona Avenue to get a drink at 11:45 a.m.

Pena decided to pull a U-turn out of the gas station by using a driveway nearby.

He started to drive away, unaware that the top of his company truck had caught onto telephone wires and were stretching them, Ramer said.

The force of the pulling shattered one of the poles and cut power to a few homes in the area, Ramer said.

Pena fled the scene following the accident but a bystander wrote down his license plate number and gave it to Chandler police.

Pena was later found and cited with a hit and run, Ramer said.

Man identified as robber at 2 stores in Mesa, 1 in Gilbert

July 22nd, 2008, 1:56 pm by John Leptich

A man robbed three stores within a three-hour period Monday before being arrested, according to Mesa and Gilbert police.

Mesa police took Cody Petersen, 36, into custody about 5 p.m. Monday. According to a report, a man police later identified as Petersen entered the Payless ShoeSource at 1221 S. Gilbert Road about 9:30 a.m. and demanded money from an employee at the register.

The report shows that Petersen made a vague verbal threat and did not display a weapon. The employee gave Petersen money from the cash register. Petersen also took merchandise and left, according to the report. Payless did not have video of the incident.

The second robbery occurred at 12:30 p.m. at KoMo, a clothing store at 1280 S. Country Club Drive. Police reports show Petersen entered the store and selected some clothing. He went to the front counter, said he had a gun and demanded money. The report indicates that Petersen wasn’t given any money and left with the clothing. Employees didn’t see a gun.

At around 2:30 p.m., a man entered Priya Dry Cleaners at 53 N. Val Vista Road in Gilbert and demanded cash.  A police report shows that he told a cashier he had a gun and would shoot if the cashier didn’t give him money. Gilbert police discovered that their Mesa counterparts responded to two similar robberies earlier in the day and arrested Petersen.

In a photo lineup, the cashier in Gilbert identified Petersen as the man who held up the dry cleaners.

Mesa police said Petersen faces two counts of robbery.
