The young will always be more apt to drive faster and more aggressive then they should. However, they at least have the reflexes to drive at least the speed limit. I saw a head on collision between two elderly drivers trying to turn left from opposite directions. Neither one could handle avoiding the other going 15 mph!!!

That wasn't a terrible accident but imagine if one of them was going normal speed. No way could they avoid each other and then you have a HECK of a wreck.

Past the age of 65 there should be a test of reflexes and the ability to avoid danger. A driving test just shows that you can drive under ideal conditions and know the rules of the road. If your reflexes only allow you enough time to avoid a collision at 45 mph then you shouldn't be allowed on a road with a speed limit any higher then that!!

Hmmmm, I'm 55. I've been in three accidents in the past four years. None were my fault, all caused by younger, more agile drivers hitting me from behind. The last one left me with a totaled car, the same one hit twice before, and an insurance company that thinks it has the right to 40+ years of my medical history before making good on some MINOR medical claims. Am I an old geezer? My license expires in 2013, when presumably MVD will check my eyes, administer a written test, and possibly, depending on my record, a drivng test.

I watch people of all ages treat the roadways and freeways as their personal race tracks, safely anonymous within their weapons of steel, asserting their personal entitlements over the rest of us with manuvers no sane race driver would attempt on any race track. These are the drivers who should be removed from the road, and their vehicles forfeit. Ditto any DUI. First time, no second chances. No provisional licenses for driving to work, no interlocks. Lose the vehicle, lose the right to ever register one in the US again, and the right to hold a drivers license anywhere in the US again. Imagine the lives saved. But no, someone's rights would be violated....

Over the age of 65, there are some very capable drivers and there are some who shouldn't be allowed on the road.
Under the age of 65, there are some very capable drivers and many who shouldn't be allowed on the road.

Sarah writes: " A HUGE FORD GRAND MARQUIS ". Maybe Sarah needs her eyes checked to see if she should be driving. There is no such vehicle as a Ford Grand Marquis. Mercury sells a Grand Marquis which is a sister car to the Ford Crown Victoria. But there are a lot of new models out there on the road so I could be wrong.
