A Tempe police officer and a city employee ended up in the hospital Thursday afternoon when an elderly driver ran a red light and plowed into their unmarked police vehicle.
The 91-year-old driver of the other car was hospitalized in serious condition, police said. The collision forced the police vehicle into another car parked nearby.
The two Tempe employees were treated and then released from Scottsdale Osborn Healthcare. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to Maricopa County Hospital in serious condition.
The intersection at Guadalupe and Rural roads was temporarily closed and reopened at 5 p.m., said police.

I SAY AGAIN, OLD GEASERS ARE MORE DANGEROUS THAN DRUNKS. JUST THE OTHER DAY, I SAW AN OLD FART DRIVING TOWARD ME ON MY SIDE OF THE ROAD W/O A CLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They should have manditory yearly driving test for elderly people.
Jason,
Show some class when you write. One day you (if your lucky enough to llive that long) you will be the subject of your writings. Or are you doing this just to get a rise? Either way, it’s a shame you dont have a better outlet in life to use than you currently do. I hope you find peace with yourself, maybe ask your grandpa to tell your father to give you that hug you been looking for.
He was probably on his blueberry, downloading some Sinatra.
91 YEAR-OLD AND STILL DRIVING???? THE OTHER DAY I WAS ON A 4 WAY STOP AND I SAW A MAYBE 300 YEAR-OLD DRIVING A HUGE FORD GRAND MARQUIS. IT WAS MY TURN TO GO WHEN I SAW THIS ELDERLY COMING AND I SAID “I BETTER STOP AND WAIT FOR HIM TO GO BECAUSE I BET YOU $100 DOLLARS THAT HE’S NOT GOING TO STOP!” SURE ENOUGH, HE KEPT DRIVING LIKE THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE ON THE ROAD, HE DIDN’T EVEN BOTHER LOOKING AROUND. IF I DIDN’T WAIT, HE WOULD HAVE CRASHED INTO MY CAR. PLEASE DO SOMETHING TO TAKE THEM OUT OF THE STREETS!!!
Blackberry I think you mean sir.
Sarah, I have never seen a 300 year old….please describe in detail…
I had never seen a wrong way driver until I moved to surprise. I have now seen 4 in the past 2 years. All 4 drivers were old. Im not saying all old drivers are bad, I just think older people should be required to take the drivers test more often.
Sarah,i was woundering the samething, but i must say maybe your the 300 year old cut your not usen lower case letter.Your usen high case letters like we cant here you, darn girl stop yelling, and try and tone it down…
and Russ i agree
Jason need to say you are CLUELESS what a waste!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think Holsten meant Dingleberry. I hear the old folks have a lot of them.
jason = sarah
“Your usen high case letters like we cant here you,…”
Wow! Can you translate that statement in to the English language?
SHERIFF JOE SHOULD START ROUNDING UP ALL THE OLD PEOPLE TOO AND SHIP THEM, UM, SOMEWHERE!!!!
thank goodness the elderly driver didn’t kill anyone
the elderly person should have their license revoked
Sarah writes: ” A HUGE FORD GRAND MARQUIS “. Maybe Sarah needs her eyes checked to see if she should be driving. There is no such vehicle as a Ford Grand Marquis. Mercury sells a Grand Marquis which is a sister car to the Ford Crown Victoria. But there are a lot of new models out there on the road so I could be wrong.
Reminds me of that south park episode where the elderly drivers are running everyone down
But seriously, Arizona licenses need to be renewed more often then every 40 years . . .
Over the age of 65, there are some very capable drivers and there are some who shouldn’t be allowed on the road.
Under the age of 65, there are some very capable drivers and many who shouldn’t be allowed on the road.
Hmmmm, I’m 55. I’ve been in three accidents in the past four years. None were my fault, all caused by younger, more agile drivers hitting me from behind. The last one left me with a totaled car, the same one hit twice before, and an insurance company that thinks it has the right to 40+ years of my medical history before making good on some MINOR medical claims. Am I an old geezer? My license expires in 2013, when presumably MVD will check my eyes, administer a written test, and possibly, depending on my record, a drivng test.
I watch people of all ages treat the roadways and freeways as their personal race tracks, safely anonymous within their weapons of steel, asserting their personal entitlements over the rest of us with manuvers no sane race driver would attempt on any race track. These are the drivers who should be removed from the road, and their vehicles forfeit. Ditto any DUI. First time, no second chances. No provisional licenses for driving to work, no interlocks. Lose the vehicle, lose the right to ever register one in the US again, and the right to hold a drivers license anywhere in the US again. Imagine the lives saved. But no, someone’s rights would be violated….
The young will always be more apt to drive faster and more aggressive then they should. However, they at least have the reflexes to drive at least the speed limit. I saw a head on collision between two elderly drivers trying to turn left from opposite directions. Neither one could handle avoiding the other going 15 mph!!!
That wasn’t a terrible accident but imagine if one of them was going normal speed. No way could they avoid each other and then you have a HECK of a wreck.
Past the age of 65 there should be a test of reflexes and the ability to avoid danger. A driving test just shows that you can drive under ideal conditions and know the rules of the road. If your reflexes only allow you enough time to avoid a collision at 45 mph then you shouldn’t be allowed on a road with a speed limit any higher then that!!
