A Fourth of July holiday weekend trip to Flagstaff ended tragically after an ATV accident claimed the life of a Tempe teenager and injured two other teens.
A 911 call reported an ATV collision on July 5th, 2008 at about 3:52 pm. Deputies of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Williams Patrol Division along with medical crews from the Williams Fire Department and Life Line Medical Transport responded to multiple victims at Forest Service Road 141, approximately 7 miles east of the Woods Subdivision.
McKenzie Dixon, 13, of Tempe was pronounced dead from blunt trauma injuries. Two 14-year-old girls who accompanied her where transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries; although the names of the two girls were not released authorities said they came from Chandler and Tempe.
According to deputies the three children had been driving the ATV west along the FSR 141, two of the girls were wearing helmets, including Dixon. The driver lost control causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and collide with a tree, said authorities.
Coconino County Sheriff’s deputies are continuing an investigation of the incident.
