Police arrested a 26-year-old man Tuesday night who’s accused of kidnapping a Gilbert woman and demanding ransom. Alex Madrid, of Mesa, was arrested just before 7:30 p.m. at a Chandler Wal-Mart after fleeing officers, police said. The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, was involved in a year-long relationship with Madrid and left voluntarily with him last Thursday. But at 11 a.m. Tuesday, the victim contacted her parents and told them that Madrid was holding her against her will and demanding money, police said. Madrid also may have assaulted the woman. But she did not suffer major injuries, police said.
Madrid was booked on suspicion of kidnapping.
