Police shoot man after attempted officer assault

May 17th, 2008, 1:24 pm · 1 Comment · posted by Devon Hersom

A 20-year-old man suspected of backing his vehicle into a Phoenix patrol car and almost striking a Phoenix police officer standing outside of her vehicle Saturday is in critical condition after officers shot him in an attempt to stop the assault.

The man’s identity has not been released, but spokeswoman Cindy Scott of Phoenix police says he will be charged with two counts of aggravated assault after he is released from the hospital.

At 12:48 a.m. Sunday morning near an I17 access road and Indian School Road, the suspect’s Nissan Frontier collided with a Chevrolet Envoy from behind.

An officer pulled behind the car and the suspect reversed into the patrol unit, Scott said. After repeatedly hitting the Envoy and the police car, the suspect reversed and almost struck an officer standing outside of her vehicle, according to Scott.

The suspect was struck several times by shots fired by the police and is currently in critical but stable position in the hospital.

Maybe this is one of those “warrants” running loose in Maricopa county that Gov Janet blames on the sheriffs dept. It’s too bad that Phx Chief Harris has never considered doing a “warrant” round up. It’s his job too!
