Police arrest Chandler man accused of stealing tax refunds

A Chandler man accused of defrauding people out of their tax refunds was arrested earlier this week.

Police said Stephan James Doimas, 61, stole more than $12,000 from his victims, who were mostly single women in need of financial help.

Doimas was taken into custody Tuesday at his residence, 660 S. Fir St., and booked on charges of forgery, theft, fraud and threats/intimidation.

According to Chandler police’s financial crimes unit, Doimas would take a victim’s tax information, file a false return and have the money deposited into his own account.

While Doimas is not a CPA, he has a tax preparer number and has been preparing taxes for nine years, police said.

Authorities are encouraging anyone who thinks they may be a victim of Doimas to contact Detective Beth Hill at (480) 782-4400 or (480) 782-4130.
