Tempe man indicted in Super Bowl threats

A Tempe man who the FBI says confessed to planning a massacre at the Super Bowl has been indicted on charges of sending threats through the mail.
The indictment alleges that Kurt Havelock sent messages to three newspapers, two local web sites and the Associated Press, a news wire service, threatening to injure children and others at the Feb. 3 Super Bowl in Glendale.
According to court documents, Havelock drove to the vicinity of the game with a semi-automatic rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition to carry out the threat, but he had a change of heart and turned himself into police.

Gold Canyon salesman arrested in connection with home invasion

Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Gold Canyon car salesman Wednesday in connection with a home invasion robbery that occurred in January.  Jamin Joel Martinez, 27, was arrested about 3 p.m. and was booked into the Pinal County Jail on suspicion of felony robbery and possession and trafficking stolen property, officials said.
Pinal County Sheriffs spokeswoman Vanessa White said that about 9 p.m. Jan. 21 a man armed with a handgun entered a Gold Canyon home and robbed the residents of jewelry and money with a combined value of $15,000.  No one was injured, but the man fled. The case was turned over to the agency’s Robbery and Homicide Unit where detectives worked with Mesa police to recover the stolen items from local pawn shops and track down Martinez, White said. Deputies also served a search warrant on Martinez’s home and located many additional stolen items and a gun. An investigation is ongoing.

Organizer of drug ring sentenced to 15 years in prison

An accused mastermind of a Valleywide drug ring has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Kristine Tietjens, 39, of Phoenix was among 31 people arrested last June after a three year investigation by federal, state and Maricopa County officials. The investigation, nicknamed “Operation Tiny Dancer,” found a connection between the ring and the white supremacist organization Aryan Brotherhood.

Tietjens pleaded guilty last month to two counts of selling drugs and one count of illegal control of an enterprise. She was sentenced Wednesday.

Man arrested on suspicion of cutting girlfriend’s throat

Police arrested a Mesa man Wednesday on suspicion of cutting his live-in girlfriend’s throat when she tried to leave him.  Mark Gegenheimer, 38, was booked into the Mesa City Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault related to domestic violence, court records show.  The crime is a felony.  According to court records, Gegenheimer and the woman had been living together for at least a year and as the woman was leaving him on Friday, he came up behind her, cut her throat with a 7-inch kitchen knife and then cut his own throat.  Both Gegenheimer and the woman were taken to local hospitals for injuries.  The woman was released Saturday and the man was released Wednesday and subsequently arrested, records show.

Suspects flee police in Chandler

Chandler police arrested two men who hit a fire hydrant and fled the scene on foot, Wednesday afternoon.

According to authorities a vehicle with three occupants lost control at the intersection of Alma School Road and Erie Street and hit a fire hydrant.

Two of the suspects in the car fled the scene on foot, said Sgt. Rick Griner, spokesperson for Chandler Police.

Authorities think the two suspects, whose names were not released, may have fled because there are two warrants for their arrest.

One suspect was apprehended at a Chase Bank in the area, and the other was found in a nearby neighborhood. Both suspects suffered minor injuries and were not transported to a hospital, said authorities.

            The third vehicle occupant was not arrested.

Two arrested after Phoenix teen shot dead

A Phoenix teenager was shot dead through her apartment’s bedroom window on Tuesday.

Two men were arrested shortly after the incident at 2209 E. Fillmore St. The suspects allegedly were trying to kill the 19-year-old victim’s boyfriend, police said.

Martin Beltran Cruz, 19, and Xavier Luna, 18, were booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. Luna also is accused of burglary and narcotics possession.

According to police, Luna recently stole some clothing from the victim’s apartment, but she got it back after making inquiries. On Monday, Luna came back but was confronted by the 20-year-old boyfriend. After making threats, Luna fled.

Shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday, the victim was killed. The boyfriend gave chase, and police caught the suspects not far away.

Apache Junction:Boy suffers face trauma

            Apache Junction Police were on-site of a bike accident that ended in face trauma for a 17 year-old male.

            According to Apache Junction authorities the boy was transported by air to the Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn in stable condition.

            The accident occurred at 9:11 p.m. at Saguaro Drive and Apache Trail when a boy fell face first while riding a BMX style bicycle.

            Authorities did not release a name.

           

Suspects fire shots during attempted burglary

A burglary suspect shot at the owner of a lifted truck Monday after the owner confronted two men trying to break into the vehicle.
According to Mesa police, the owner was sitting in a car parked near his truck when he saw the attempted burglary in the parking lot of Albertson’s, 9243 E. Baseline Road.
The suspects got into a 4-wheel-drive vehicle driven by a woman and fled, police said.
One of the passengers fired a round at the victim as they left, missing him.

Former Chandler trailer park manager arrested

A former manager of a Chandler trailer park was arrested for allegedly stealing rent and overcharging tenants.

Silvia Howato Pena, 49, was taken into custody Sunday at her Mesa residence. She was booked on suspicion of theft.

According to Chandler police documents, Pena was fired from her position at Westwind Trailer Homes, 505 E. Chandler Blvd, last September. The property manager told authorities Pena had stolen more than $4,700 in rent and, against company policy, charged tenants fees totaling about $6,900.

Tom Stapley, co-owner of THG Property Management, said the illicit fees were for parking and the change in ownership when THG bought Westwind in April 2007.

Pena has denied the allegations, police said.

Two vehicle collision

            A two vehicle accident at Roosevelt Street and Broadway Road in Tempe left three people seriously injured.

Tempe fire officials said all patients were transported with serious injuries. Authorities did not release any names but said that two of the victims were transported to Maricopa Medical Center and one was transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn.

The collision occurred around 9:16 p.m. Tempe fire officials were unsure of the cause of the accident late Monday night.
