Armed robbers arrested

Mesa police arrested two Phoenix men Thursday on suspicion of committing a home invasion in November that netted $80,000 in cash.
One of the robbers kicked a 3-year-old during the robbery and punched the mother in the face, court documents state.
Police linked Rene Perez, 21, to the Nov. 13 robbery by fingerprints.
The victim also picked Joaquin U. Barraza, 23, out of a photo line up.

Police find hidden compartment with drugs

Police arrested two men at Arizona Mills Mall Thursday on suspicion of possessing marijuana and burglary tools.

Police said two undercover detectives were watching the parking lot of the mall about 3 p.m. when they noticed a suspicious vehicle driving up and down parking aisles with people inside who appeared to be peering into parked cars.

Detectives followed the vehicle to two more parking lots along Baseline Road between Interstate 10 and 48th Street and watched as the suspects possibly cased vehicles. Patrol stopped the vehicle in the area of Pointe Parkway and Baseline Road.The officer smelled burning and fresh marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A K-9 dog was called out to search the car and alerted police to the glove compartment. Police found a concealed area located behind the glove compartment that contained drugs.

Officers also found a jiggle key, typically used to break into cars, and a small screwdriver bent at a 90-degree angle.

Ignacio Tapia-Moreno, 27, and Luis-Miguel Durazo, 25, were booked into Tempe City Jail, police said.

Robber uses fake bomb

A robber got away with pain pills from a Mesa pharmacy after threatening to set off a bomb.
According to a written Mesa police summary of the incident, a man placed a bag with a cell phone on it on the counter of Az Discount Pharmacy, 1059 N. Mesa Drive, demanded the pills and said he would detonate the bomb if police arrived within three minutes.
Police evacuated nearby businesses and conducted a search by ground and air officers, but they couldn’t find the suspect.
There was no bomb in the bag, police said.
Police are looking for a white male in his 30s, 6 feet, 200 pounds who was wearing a grey sweatshirt with red lettering, a red baseball cap and wearing a Bluetooth.

Women sentenced in stabbing

A Mesa woman accused in the stabbing of an 80-year-old man who later died in the hospital pleaded guilty Tuesday to a count of aggravated assault.
Michael Scerbo, spokesman for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, said prosecutors are going to ask for a 4-year prison sentence for Tina Salazar, 22, at her sentencing scheduled for Feb. 22.
Jerry Naponelli said he stabbed Salazar after she stabbed him July 3 at his east Mesa home.
Salazar told police Naponelli stabbed her, but she didn’t remember stabbing him.
Naponelli died 15 days later after a series of medical complications and surgeries.

Chiropractor sentenced for tax evasion

A federal magistrate judge sentenced an Apache Junction chiropracterTuesday to 18 months in prison on income tax charges.
According to a U.S. Attorney’s Office press release, Roy A. Ottinger, 48, did not pay taxes on almost $2 million of income from his practice and more than $100,000 of income from property he owned.
Ottinger argued that his income was excluded from taxation under the U.S. Constitution.

Burglar busted after neighbor spots him

An alert neighbor and team work of Gilbert police led to the arrest of a burglar Wednesday.
A neighbor called police to tell them a man was pacing in front of 20 S. Buena Vista Ave., and he pried the front door as she called police.
An officer went into the house and heard noise in the basement and found the suspect, John Elroy Kraklio II, 33, leaving through a basement window.
He ran into the arms of two other Gilbert officers.
Police found Kraklio’s car and stolen items in it, including the duffel bag of a Phoenix firefighter who reported it stolen that morning in Tempe.

‘Baseball Cap Bandit’ sentencing delayed

The sentencing of Kyle Hammaker, who police dubbed the “Baseball Cap Bandit” after he robbed several East Valley businesses wearing a hat, has been delayed. Hammaker pleaded guilty last month to two counts of armed robbery and one court of robbery for three heists in Mesa and Tempe. He was scheduled to be sentenced this morning at 8:30 in Maricopa County Superior Court, but the sentencing has been delayed until Feb. 8. In all, the county prosecutor’s office says, Hammaker faces up to 21 years in prison.

Suspicious men arrested

Police arrested two men in Gilbert on Tuesday after officers believed the pair was casing the area for cars to burglarize.
Officers stopped Jaime Andres Sanchez, 28, and Dusty Tracy, 23, after police received a call about a suspicious vehicle in a neighborhood near Greenfield and Warner roads.
The neighborhood is near several areas hit by a recent rash of vehicle burglaries.
No evidence of actual burglaries were discovered, police said. But Sanchez was arrested for driving with a suspended license, and Tracy was arrested for possessing paraphernalia and dangerous drugs.

Mobile home fire

GILBERT
Fire crews responded to a blaze at a Gilbert mobile home late Tuesday after a heating unit caught fire and spread to the attic.
No one was injured in the fire, which broke out just after 11 p.m. at 212 S. 29th Place, near Elliot and Lindsay roads.
However, the fire did significantly damage the home, officials said.
Authorities are still investigating what caused the heating unit to ignite.

Cops chase, catch three suspected in burglaries

Police arrested three men and a teen Tuesday in connection with a home burglary in
Tempe where the suspects made off with electronics, DVDs and clothing.

Tyreece Harry, 20, Leshon Jones, 22, Andrew Kizzee, 20, were booked into Tempe City Jail on suspicion of burglary-related charges. A 17-year-old boy was taken to the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Center.  The incident occurred a little after noon at an apartment located at 1600
W. La Jolla. Police said the suspects forced entry into the victim’s apartment. A neighbor saw the crime and called police.

Kizzee and the teen ran away and jumped a wall, running onto U.S. 60 near Interstate 10. However, police soon caught up with them and they were taken into custody.

During the investigation, detectives discovered the suspects may have committed a second burglary at the same apartment complex prior to their arrest. Officers found the stolen goods in the suspects’ vehicles.
