Bomb squad responds to possible explosives in dumpsters

Tempe police’s Bomb Squad was called out Wednesday after a resident reported what looked like pipe bombs in an apartment complex dumpster.

Police spokesman officer Brandon Banks said officials found five 18-inch PVC pipes with end caps on both sides and what looked like fuses sticking out, but that the items turned out not to be bombs.

“Our bomb technicians were able to go in and found that all five were empty and appeared to have no residue or anything in them,” Banks said.

The items were found about 1:15 p.m. in the 1800 block of E. Kirkland Lane.

They may have been used as props in a play or for some sort of practical joke, Banks said.

Police said they will search every dumpster in the area just as a precaution.
