Sheriff Arpaio called to jury duty

December 20th, 2007, 10:09 am by daryljames

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio reported to jury duty Thursday morning in downtown Phoenix.

He said in a prepared statement that he was thriled with the call to civic duty, but he does not expect to make the final cut for a case assignment.

“I have no excuses prepared to get out of serving,” Arpaio said. “In fact, I’d love to serve but I seriously doubt that anyone would want me on a jury in this county. Any criminal defense attorney would probably figure I’m a little too hard nosed to be considered impartial.”

Arpaio is at the court building at 111 S. Third Street, where is he waiting for his name to be called to a courtroom, where a judge will question his worthiness as a jury member.

Feds seize thousands of fake checks

December 18th, 2007, 12:29 pm by Katie McDevitt

A team of Canadian and U.S. fraud investigators based in
Montreal, Quebec announced Tuesday the seizure of more than 50,000 pieces of mail containing fake checks totaling $195 million. No arrests have been made in the fraud case, but an investigation is ongoing, U.S. Postal Inspection Service officials  said. The seized mail contained letters telling the recipient he or she has won a cash price worth thousands in an international promotional campaign and includes a $2,000 to $5,000 check. To collect the full amount of the “prize,” the recipient is asked to cash the check and quickly return all or part of the proceeds, usually via wire transfer, to pay for some kind of international administration fee. But by the time anyone discovers the check is fake, the scammer has the money and the recipient gets nothing. Postal inspectors caution the public that there is no legitimate reason for any contest promoter, business or organization to send a check out and asked that it be cashed and wired back.Officials ask anyone who receives a letter containing a suspected fraudulent check to report it to Postal Inspectors the Web site www.FakeChecks.org or by calling 1-800-372-8347.
