Fire at Mesa day care blamed on accident

A fire that gutted a Mesa day care center earlier this week is being blamed on an accident.
Shining Star Preschool, 810 E. Southern Ave., suffered $100,000 in damage during Monday’s blaze. No one was in the building at the time, as the school was closed for Christmas.
According to Mesa deputy fire chief Mike Dunn, the fire began in the kitchen and spread to a classroom. Other parts of the building had smoke damage.
Investigators concluded the preschool workers inadvertently triggered the fire while loading supplies into the kitchen. Someone bumped a knob on the stove, turning on a burner, and the heat eventually set a cardboard box on fire.
