A man struck and killed by a police vehicle after he walked into freeway traffic has been identified as a Mesa resident.
Barry John Nelson, 45, died Saturday morning on U.S. Highway 60.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Nelson’s 2000 Nissan Quest had broken down and he was in the eastbound right shoulder of the highway, near Linsday Road.
For an unknown reason, Nelson walked around the front of the minivan into oncoming traffic, and was struck by a Mesa Police Department motor home. Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene after the 8:32 a.m. incident.
The police vehicle, used in DUI enforcement, was driven by a volunteer. She was unharmed, Mesa authorities said.
