Authorities arrested a 44-year-old man Monday in Chandler for lying in the roadway where he was been sleeping for the past two weeks.Marrietta Leander, a transient, was arrested at 10:48 p.m. at Frye Road and Arizona Avenue where police say he also had an open 24 ounce can of Budweiser, according to a Chandler City Court document.Police wrote in the court document that Leander gets intoxicated and lies in the road. He was almost struck by vehicles numerous times, the document says.Leander was booked into jail on suspicion of walking in the street when a sidewalk was available, having an open container and maintaining a nuisance.

Maricopa County Superior Court is seeking public comment on 33 applicants for its opening on the court.The Maricopa County Commission on Trial Court Appointments will review the applications and take public testimony at a meeting on Oct. 10. The meeting will be held at the Arizona State Courts Building in Phoenix, 1501 W. Washington St., Room 345, beginning at 9 a.m.Members of the public may also send written comments to 1501 W. Washington St., Ste. 227, Phoenix, AZ, 85007 or to jnc@courts.az.gov. Written comments must arrive by Oct. 5 to be considered. The commission will not consider anonymous comments.The applicants chosen at the Oct. 10 meeting will be interviewed on Oct. 24. The commission then will send three nominees on to Gov. Janet Napolitano, who will select the new judge.The applicants being considered are Aimee L. Anderson, Trace A. Bartlett, Edward W. Bassett, Susan M. Brnovich, Bruce D. Gilbert police are investigating the kidnapping of a man in the middle of the day Tuesday. Authorities were called at 2:34 p.m. to the 4000 block of East Del Rio in response to the abduction of a 34-year-old Hispanic male. Three people, including an autistic boy, were injured this afternoon when a vehicle ran a stop sign in east Mesa and collided with another vehicle, police said. All three were being flown to local hospitals, though none
had life-threatening injuries, said Mesa Police Det. Steve Berry.The crash happened a little before 5 p.m. at Sossaman and Pecos roads. The boy with autism was not seriously hurt, but he was unable to tell emergency crews what his injuries were, Berry said. He was taken to a hospital just in case, Berry said. Police were investigating the cause of the crash.

A transient man was arrested Monday on suspicion of walking into a restaurant and verbally threatening a woman as she sat with her three young children.Police said Glenn Krueger, 42, made racist statements toward the woman about 6:30 p.m., and said a 9 mm gun could help the problem. The man then started to reach into his backpack, and was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and threatening. Krueger continued to make racist comments following his arrest, police said.He was booked into the Tempe City Jail.

An armed robber made off Monday night with a man’s cell phone and his Burger King uniform, Mesa police said. Court records indicate the victim was walking north on the sidewalk along Stapley Drive when he stopped at 10:52 p.m. to help a motorist who asked for directions. The victim walked up to driver, who was stopped in the parking lot at 734 S. Stapley Drive. Police said the driver pointed a black semiautomatic handgun at the victim and demanded his property. The assailant left southbound on Stapley in a black, late-1990s model four-door Chrysler sedan with chrome rims. The victim described the assailant as a Hispanic male, 20 to 25 years old with a shaved head, thin build and wearing a white T-shirt. The victim said the gunman was alone in the vehicle.

A Chandler police officer pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning in the death of his K-9 companion. Sgt. Tom Lovejoy filed paperwork for the plea through his attorney and did not appear at San Tan Justice Court. A scheduled hearing for Lovejoy was canceled after the plea was received, and several dozen Chandler police officers who came to support their colleague left without comment. Police have identified the man shot and killed on Sept. 16 in Mesa as 30-year-old Julio Arcenio Marquez Velazquez.Police spokesman Det. Chris Arvayo said he did not yet know where Marquez was from.Police learned of Marquez’ death in the area of 700 N. Gable after an anonymous person called police from a payphone to report a shooting.Anyone will further information on the slaying, call (480) 644-2211.
