A suspected bank robber tried to hide from police inside a fold away couch Tuesday. Robert Venegas, 33, was booked on a felony warrant and other misdemeanor charges by Mesa police while Gilbert police investigate an armed robbery at Compass Bank, 1085 E. Baseline Road. According to a police summary of the incident, it began at the bank at 9:25 p.m. when a an Hispanic male with a bandana over his face used a home-made knife to rob someone. Mesa police responded and found a man getting into a white pickup truck. He spoke briefly with the officer and then sped away, but a police helicopter was hovering above and followed the truck.The driver bailed out and police believed he was hiding at 1261 E. Harmony Ave.A SWAT team showed up and found Venegas hiding in the couch.
