I-17 jammed; Drive safely this weekend

Heads-up, Commuters!

Holiday weekend traffic + Rush Hour = A Huge Wait Getting Out-of-Town.

Officials said traffic is badly backed up on northbound Interstate 17. They recommend choosing other routes, if possible, such as Loop 101, Interstate 10 and state route 51.

They also remind drivers to be safe.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety reported that 23 people died in collisions on Arizona roadways on Labor Day weekend last year.

The key causes?

- Driving under the influence; make sure you have a designated driver or call a cab this weekend, if you plan to drink alcohol.

- Not wearing a seat belt

- Speeding

- Not yielding to emergency vehicles; move over for ambulances and law enforcement.

- Fatigue; pull over if you’re tired.

- Talking on a cell phone or text messaging

Officers across the state remind drivers that they will be continuing their DUI crackdown through the weekend.
